Here is a link to an old, but good, interview with Professor Chomsky discussing the so-called War on Drugs and the PIC.
Even though this interview is ten years old, it is, unfortunately, still as relevant today as it was then. In the interview Chomsky correctly frames the hysteria that the government and media perpetuate regarding crime as serving both an economic goal and functioning as population control.
Just as Chomsky pointed out that the US seems to actively engage in international activities that increase drug production and use (both overtly and clandestinely), domestically the government continues to promulgate laws seemingly drafted in order to maximize the harm these drugs have on the population. Here is the latest salvo launched in order to guarantee that the social impact of drug use accomplishes maximum damage in the drug-using community: Bill Would Limit Needle Exchanges.
