This weekend I joined several of my cohort-mates at the 2009 Gay Pride Parade in Cutten. While there was some concern that Cutten would not be very welcoming, the opposite turned out to be true: there was a good turnout and many people sat outside their homes, waving as the parade paraded by.
I think the parade was a great example of Community Work. It was organized and staged through the work of dozens of volunteers, community activists, and with the support of several local businesses. The HSU marching band lent their enthusiasm and talent, playing loudly and cajoling along the onlookers. Some professions seemed to have organized extensively in order to make an impact on the parade. Social workers were especially represented, not just by the many students who were involved but by a contingent of mental health professionals who advertised their support by marching and holding a large banner.
